doubt it. Automatic is defined as one depression of the trigger to allow multiple rounds to be discharged or words to that effect.
Would be well looked upon by the fuzz but after they have taken your guns and you are before a magistrate it would be dismissed.

People have been doing this with their thumbs for years.

True, though I do remember reading about devices designed to allow full auto fire are prohibited which they could try and class this as even though its a timber rod and like you say it can be done with your thumb.

But full auto is define by one depression of the trigger not multiple depressions.
But I am sure the states will update their Acts one day.

Thats a good point, even using a "device" it is still not technically full auto...
